TRAUMA THERAPY IN NYC
Individual Psychotherapy
Something feels off. Things aren’t working the way you want them to.
Maybe things that used to be easy are suddenly overwhelming or tedious. Or you’ve been struggling with the impact of difficult events. These might be recent, or experiences throughout your life that have shaped you. Maybe you’ve been told to toughen up, or that you’re dwelling in the past. This might lead you to withdrawing from others, falling into patterns of similar dissatisfying relationships.
Your body can’t keep up.
You may be feeling tired, unfocused, unmotivated, or unlike yourself. It might feel like you’re floating in a haze, or maybe the opposite, like everything is too loud and intrusive. Headaches, racing thoughts, racing heartbeat, nightmares, trouble breathing, and trouble sleeping might be ongoing parts of your day, or just the warning signs that things are getting particularly bad.
Maybe you already know where ‘particularly bad’ leads for you- panic attacks, mood episodes, flashbacks, impulsive decisions, isolation and withdrawal, discontinuing projects, disordered eating, addictive or self-injuring behaviors.
Or maybe it’s not clear how anything could worsen, because it’s equally unclear how to make anything better.
Together, we can piece together a detailed tapestry of your life.
Through psycheducation, identifying patterns, and uncovering the origins of self-defeating cycles, we get a clearer picture of what is driving your symptoms and what is keeping you stuck.
Understanding the way our brains and nervous systems work, and how the systems we are living in impact the responses we get from others can help us recognize how we’ve learned to survive and make sense of the world around us.
Our goal isn’t to judge or extract ‘bad parts.’
It’s to recognize if we are ignoring persistent internal distress cues. To notice how we judge and react to our own responses and how this contributes to our self-concept. And from there, to recognize how to care for our system and how to be a persistent source of care and support for ourselves.
